INAC will not “claw back” funding for H1N1 School closures

October 5th, 2009

The First Nations Schools Association Board was notified last week that INAC, BC Region has taken the position to “claw back” funding from First Nations who close their schools to control H1N1 outbreaks. This information is incorrect; BC Region has no intention to recover funds from First Nations dues to school closures relating to H1N1 outbreaks.

In a letter to the President of the FNSA dated September 30th, 2009, INAC states “BC Region is confident that First Nation communities and schools will follow their pandemic plans and work with appropriate health care providers to determine what steps are neccesary to control H1N1 outbreaks, including the possibility of school closures. The health of First Nations children is paramount and decisions made by First Nations schools and health care providers to control the spread of the H1N1 virus within your communities will be supported.”
